Researchers first discovered rapamycin in a type of soil bacteria. It was first interesting to scientists because it had antifungal properties. With more research, though, scientists found that it also helped to suppress the immune system, slowed the spread of disease, regulated cell growth and influenced metabolism.
Most recently, researchers discovered that rapamycin can also modulate aging and the development of age-related diseases.

Most studies testing the effectiveness of rapamycin for longevity have been done on mice.
Many studies carried out from 2009 to 2011 caused ripples in the world of anti-aging research; they found that rapamycin, indeed, lengthened mice’s lives.
The question of whether it actually helped to slow aging (kept the mice healthy while they lived longer), however, remained unanswered.
Researchers published many studies over the next several years and had contradictory results.
One study published in 2012 by researchers at the University of Michigan found that rapamycin did slow aging. They found that rapamycin could slow liver damage and improve general cell health, uterine health, and the function of other organs.
So, while rapamycin appears to have some positive effects on aging in animal studies, it is too early in the research game for this pill to call it a miracle drug for humans. Researchers are hopeful, though, that it might prove to be a powerful tool in our fight against age-related diseases!
Where Can You Get Rapamycin?
Rapamycin, often known as Sirolimus, is an “anti-aging pill” not available over-the-counter. Doctors must prescribe rapamycin to patients because it may also prove to have serious side effects, including an increased likelihood of cancer or serious infection.
What Is Curcumin?
Curcuma longa, the plant from which turmeric is derived, has long been used in Asia as a medicinal herb and spice. Researchers believe that curcumin, a component in the turmeric spice, is responsible for many of the health properties of the root.
Studies show that curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cancer-fighting properties.

Studies in Worms
One study examined the potential anti-aging effects of curcumin in C. elegans, which is the scientific name for a type of roundworm. Researchers found that curcumin did, indeed increase lifespan, and reduced free radicals associated with cell aging in these worms.
Curcumin’s antioxidative properties were found to be responsible for fighting the free radicals, protecting the worm’s cells from damage and disease, and increasing their lifespan.
Studies in Fruit Flies
A similar study was carried out with two different strains of fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) that were fed curcumin.
Researchers found that curcumin extended the lifespan of both strains of fruit flies. And, like the group that studied the roundworms, these researchers also detected protection against free radicals and improved cell health.
Interestingly, this study found that the flies who ate curcumin had differences in how their cells read their DNA. Flies whose diets contained curcumin had fewer aging genes turned on than those that didn’t.
This means curcumin may be able to slow aging and age-related diseases right at the very root of cellular health.
Excitingly, these results could be confirmed by a second study!
Studies in Mice
A third group of studies were carried out with mice, which helped to determine that curcumin could influence the longevity of more complex animals.
Curcumin was found to improve protect against free radicals, improve artery function (i.e. reduce the risk of heart disease), reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and help mice with dysfunctions in brain circulation (i.e. reduce the risk of other dementias).
Studies in Humans
Unfortunately, there are no human clinical trials looking at aging and curcumin, yet.
So far, we only have a few studies carried out on human skin cells. Importantly, though, these studies matched the results from studies on animals. They showed the same protection against free radicals we’d seen in animal cells.
This doesn’t prove that curcumin can slow aging and disease in humans, for sure, but it does suggest it really could!
