The 13 Best Blenders for Your Healthy Lifestyle

If you want to give your healthy lifestyle a quick boost and take your diet to the next level, you need the best blender you can get!

For the bulk of my career, I have worked between a gym and a university (I am what many would consider a “perpetual student”).  This means early mornings, late nights, and trying to cram in as much study as I possibly can in between.

As stressful as this was, I seemed to manage it OK.

I mean, I survived, right?

However, I did have a bit of trouble with one thing in particular.  For a very long time, my diet was pretty average.

Now, don’t get me wrong — at the time I thought it was pretty good.

I mean, I ate chicken breast, roasted sweet potato, and some veggies every single day (heck, I often had it twice a day).  I typically had a cheap protein shake after a workout.  Oh yeah, and I would also grab the “healthiest” take out I possibly could on my way home, before passing out in bed, ready to do it all again tomorrow.

Super healthy….

While these foods are a far cry from what most of you would consider “bad”, it is important to note that I ate the same thing pretty much every day, seven days per week.  As a result, I was not getting anywhere near the spectrum of vitamins and minerals my body needed to function effectively.

Over time, this became apparent.

The Downward Spiral

Man covering his face

I really started to get worn down.  I felt flat and lethargic all the time and I found myself getting sick frequently.  To make matters worse, I was generally really irritable.

I just wasn’t myself and I really didn’t know what was going on.

It wasn’t until I heard a rather timely lecture on the importance of micronutrients that everything clicked.  I had a bit of a light bulb moment and realized that although the food I was eating met my “macronutrient” requirements (think protein, carbs, and fats), it did not contain anywhere near enough vitamins and minerals for my body to function optimally.

Something needed to change.

Enter the Blender

But there was still the issue of having very little time to physically prepare food.  Then I remembered that I had an old blender (that my mom had actually given me for Christmas) sitting in the back of my kitchen cupboard.

Jackpot!

That night I went out and bought a whole heap of colorful fruits, some leafy greens, some avocados, and milk.  I started replacing my protein shakes with what I called “super smoothies” (which is just literally every ingredient I mentioned above thrown into a blender).  I had one every day, and have not looked back since.

My health improved, I had more energy, and, most importantly, I was feeling so much better on a daily basis.

It was unreal.

Since making this change, I have recommended this same thing to a heap of my clients with exceptional results.  They tend to feel better, they get sick less often, and, interestingly, it seems the results of their training improve, too.

And it all started with a little blender (which I have since upgraded)!

What Should You Look for in a Blender?

Three people holding green smoothies

If you are anything like me, then you are going to be using this bad boy daily.  I blend up enough to produce two super smoothies every single day.  This means that I want something that is going to be reliable, durable, and can handle anything that is thrown its way.

Which is why I wanted to outline everything you need to look for in a good quality blender that will work with your lifestyle and meet all your blending needs.

Blender Size

Blenders can seriously vary in size.

Some have enough volume for 2-3 cups, while others go all the way up to 72 ounces.  If you are anything like me, then 6-8 cups will likely be about the sweet spot unless you intend on making big batches of food (such as soup).

In this case, you are going to need something just a little bigger.

Material

Blenders can be made of metal, plastic, and glass.  Consider how often you are going to be using your blender and whether you are going to be taking it with you anywhere (as embarrassing as this is to say, I often take mine traveling).

Plastic tends to be less likely to break and cheaper, which makes it a very safe option for those who travel a lot.  Glass and metal tend to be heavier but often use slightly higher quality parts, which means they may be better suited for home use and big cooking jobs

Size of the Motor

Most blenders tend to have somewhere between 200 and 800 watts of power — which is enough for simple smoothies and juices.  Alternatively, some industrial blenders might have more than 1000 watts of power, which is required for those big jobs

As a general rule of thumb, the more power, the more versatile and durable the machine.  So, I often recommend opting for the most powerful blender you can afford if you plan on making more than just smoothies.

Speed and Pulse Settings

I can appreciate that this may sound a little bit pedantic but I am a firm believer that if you want to blend something other than smoothies, you need a minimum of two speed settings.  This is because it allows you to gradually increase the speed of the blender as you use it, which places less stress on the motor.

This, ultimately, means the blender will last you longer.  (I should note that if you are anything like me, and simply use your blender for smoothies, then one speed setting is perfect!)

Additionally, in my personal opinion, a pulse button is a must have if you like putting ice in your smoothies.  Otherwise, it gets trapped at the bottom of the shake.

Price Point

Obviously, price is a big one.

While there is definitely some truth to the “get what you pay for” motto, when it comes to blenders, you can still get some damn good options on the cheap.  The trick is to look at the reviews closely and pick a machine that meets your individual needs.

This way your blender will last you a long time, even if you want to keep your spending to the bare minimum.

Warranty

Last but not least, make sure you try and find a machine that has a decent warranty period.

While most machines do have a 12-month-minimum warranty, some cover a much longer period than that — which is perfect if you plan on using your blender every single day (like I do).
